Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Optimization for Load Frequency Control in Micro Hydro Power Plant using Imperialist Competitive Algorithm

By Muhammad Ruswandi Djalal Sonong Marhatang

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijem.2018.05.01, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2018

This research proposes an additional controller for load frequency control at a micro hydro power plant using PID-SMES. The PID-SMES parameters are optimized using smart methods, Imperialist Competitive Algorithms (ICA), which can find the optimal value of PID-SMES. From the analysis results, obtained on the P controller, overshoot of -0.0002176, with PI Controller -0.0002167, with PD Controller -0.0002128, with PID controller -0.0002118, with SMES controller -0.0001951, and with PID-SMES -4.11e-05. ICA optimization results obtained fitness function value of 1.79846040002633e-08, with 40 iterations. The minimum value of the system performance function at each iteration is plotted on the convergence graph shown. In the Figure it can be seen that the ICA algorithm can quickly converge on the 14th iteration or find the most optimal value at the 7th iteration. The PID-SMES controller proposed in this study has a significant influence in the damping of the oscillations. Therefore, it is proposed to be applied to micro-hydro.

Reversible Joint Watermarking for Medical Images and Videos

By Kavitha K. J. B. Priestly Shan

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijem.2018.05.02, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2018

Nowadays Digital Watermarking is widely used in the health care centers to secure the patient’s records. In India, nowadays the hospitals are adapting the telemedicine technology where it is providing facility for the patients and doctors to transmit the reports and as well as to access it easily as and when it is required to do so. In order to protect the privacy, authenticity and the integrity of the Electronic Health Record (EHR), some measure has to be employed. In this regard Digital watermarking (DWM) plays a major role. Digital watermarking is implemented in mainly two domains: one at the pixel level usually called as the spatial domain and the other is at the frequency components of the information called as the frequency domain. Of the two methods, second method is most commonly adapted by most of the researchers. It includes the transforms like Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and the variations of DWT viz. Lifting Wavelet Transform (LWT) and Integer Wavelet Transform (IWT). In this paper DWM for the medical scanned images and the medical video is implemented using DWT. The watermark is patient information which will be converted to quick response (QR) code using the built in function. A simple key is used at the embedding part of the DWM technique and the same key is used at the decoder side to retrieve the information which enhances the security of both medical images/videos and the patient details.

Electromagnet Separator of Different Particles

By Ayad Ahmed Nour El Islam Ayad Abdelghani Boudjela Houari

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijem.2018.05.03, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2018

In this paper we simulate and realize an electromagnetic separator excited with an alternating current. And, we will to see the factors that influence the separation. This realization is used for the separation of the ferromagnetic and non ferromagnetic particles. The aim of this application is to recover the particles of non ferrous and ferrous from mixture by attractive magnetic force with big rate of separation. Experiments’ results and simulation of this separator, finally the parameters of separation are optimized with prediction method is presented in this paper.

Design and Implementation of a DDR2 SDRAM Controller for Audio Data on a Reconfigurable Platform

By Arun Tigadi Hansraj Guhilot

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijem.2018.05.04, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2018

Multimedia applications play a very important role in the field of VLSI design and embedded systems. They need a large amount of memory storage with higher bandwidth and higher speed. To overcome this hazard, a memory controller is required. A memory controller is a device that stores the data and gives it back whenever required. Real-time recording of an audio data and finally storing it without losing the data is a difficult task. This paper describes the usage of Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access memory controller for storing the audio data. The design uses finite state machine (FSM) architecture that is developed for testing of this algorithm. Audio codec device is used for the conversion of analog data into digital and vice versa. The tool used to simulate this design is Xilinx ISE design suite. The hardware used to synthesize this design is FPGA Spartan-3 kit.

Extraction of Facial Features for Detection of Human Emotions under Noisy Condition

By Mritunjay Rai R. K. Yadav Agha A. Husain Tanmoy Maity Dileep K. Yadav

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijem.2018.05.05, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2018

Affirmation of human faces out of still pictures or picture progressions is an as of now making research field. There are an extensive variety of engagements for structures adjusting to the issue of face limitation and affirmation e.g. exhibit based video coding, face conspicuous confirmation for security structures, look area, and human-PC connection. The acknowledgment and region of the face, and furthermore the extraction of facial features from the photos, are fundamental. In view of assortments in illumination, establishment, visual point and outward appearances, the issue becomes complicated. This paper presents a novel method to extract human facial features for the detection of human emotions (such as “sad”, “happy”, “sorrow” etc.) under noisy conditions. This whole work constitutes better working of a video surveillance system. For detection and extraction of facial features simple formulae are used to represent skin color models depending on the range of HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value) values used for the detection of human skin. Here HSV color model is used because it is fast as well as compatible with human color perception. Additionally, implementation of Probability Neural Network (PNN) enhances the working of the surveillance system. Utilization of PNN expands the ability of surveillance framework as it can give the yield image regardless of whether the information image contains noise in it. The proposed algorithm for the entire task is developed using MATLAB software along with suitable Image Processing Toolbox (IPT).
